Match Report: Copa del Rey campaign comes to a close (3-0)

Valencia CF returned to cup action against Sevilla FC at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Wednesday the 27th of January at 7pm kick-off time for their last 16 knockout tie in the Copa del Rey.

Valencia CF were off to a backfoot start with the home side taking the initiative going forward in the early goings of the game while Valencia CF were looking to settle into the game. Alas, Luuk de Jong made it 1-0 to the Andalusian side on 19 minutes.

The first Valencia CF effort fell to Koba Koindredi Leïn halfway through the first half but his tamed effort did not trouble Bono. Moments later, Daniel Wass delivered a cross from the right-hand side but Jason Remesseiro could not quite get power behind it.

Aforementioned Jason tried his luck on the 30-minute mark but his shot went straight at Bono who gobbled it up. Albeit, two minutes later, Luuk De Jong made it 2-0 to Sevilla FC.

Alex Blanco responded at the other end looking to get back in the Copa del Rey tie but his effort flew over the crossbar. Ivan Rakitić made it 3-0 late on and the half-time whistle was blown at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in the Andalusian capital.

The same script followed in the second half with Valencia CF trying to reduce the deficit early in the second period pressing high up the pitch whilst trying to withstand Sevilla’s attacks.  

Javi  Gracia made two changes on 53 minutes, Gabriel Paulista and Uroš Račić made way for Guillem Molina and Vicente Esquerdo respectively as Valencia CF were gradually enjoying spells on the balls and counter-pressing high up the pitch to win it back.

Daniel Wass forced a save out of Bono with a powerful follow-up shot which turned away to safety on 72 minutes. Minutes later, Toni Lato came tantalisingly close to pulling one back with a goal-gaping opportunity from outside the box. 

Things took a turn for the worse as they were forced into a late substitution as Koba Koindredi Leïn was replaced by Yunus Musah. The game finished 3-0 to Sevilla and the Copa del Rey campaign came to a close in the Andalusian capital in Seville.

Valencia CF will welcome near-neighbours Elche CF on Saturday the 30th of January at Mestalla at 6:30 pm kick-off time on matchday 21 of LaLiga Santander.
